Refurbishment of Redundant Wings and Transformation of Historical Hospital for Miller Construction
Robinson Kenning & Gallagher worked closely with Croydon Health Services (CHS) NHS Trust and the contractor Miller Construction (now Galliford Try) to transform a historical Art Deco hospital into a 21st Century healthcare facility. RKG were appointed as Project Architects from inception to completion of this £11.5 million high-profile hospital makeover. Two wings of the hospital had been redundant for many years and required complete refurbishment, whilst new entrances and entrance structures were designed/built at the front of the hospital. Elsewhere comprehensive structural works were undertaken as rooms were rationalised into more usable spaces.
The detailed development process included workshops with all CHS user groups to allow staff and service user input into each design stage. The renovated hospital created a new centre for integrated care services that now sees around 7,500 patient attendances each month. New facilities included physiotherapy and diabetic retinopathy clinics, an expanded imaging service, GP practices, an ophthalmology clinic, and a fully-renovated Urgent Care Centre which continued to serve the local community during the construction works.
