Main Entrance Adaptations
This original entrance to the station had become congested and the pedestrian flow of passenger through the subway was being restricted by the existing gateline and limited circulation space.
RKG were employed by SSWT to redesign the area in order to create greater circulation and passenger movement whilst increasing ticket facilities.
The final design reduced the back of house space of the existing ticket office to enable an increase in front of house circulation and ticketing facilities.
A new gateline with increased gates and automatic wide aisle gates was installed and existing tenancies relocated and refurbished.
The estimated cost of the project is valued at £1.5M.
Brighton Yard Entrance
This original entrance to the station was closed in 1947 and has remained out of use since apart from a period in the 1960’s when it was once again used as a passenger entrance/exit.
As part of the Access for All project providing lift access to all 17 platforms from the Overbridge the Brighton Yard Building will be re-opened to provide a new passenger entrance and exit from the Station with disabled access into the Station and onto the Overbridge.
Additional facilities include new passenger toilets including DDA and DDA baby changing as well as retail outlets.
The Forecourt will provide drop off and turning off of St John’s Hill with footpaths leading up to the new entrance along with covered bicycle parking.
The estimated cost of the project is valued at £1.5M.
Platform 9/10 Waiting Room
The buildings to platforms 9/10 originally comprised a former traction sub-station building to the country end & main building with office accommodation used by the Station Manager & associated support staff adjacent the southern overbridge, together with rooms containing comms equipment, station control point, staff accommodation facilities & areas used by Revenue Protection.
The Buildings maintain many of their original features & the intention of the design was to retain the original character & styling of the buildings whilst providing new facilities for the staff and passengers alike.
The design provides for: The existing store building to the country end of the platforms to be adapted and refurbished to provide new staff accommodation.
Alteration and refurbishment of the office accommodation areas to the main building including original station control point, staff facilities and areas used by Revenue Protection to form new passenger waiting room and retail unit.
A new opening has also been formed giving public access to the new waiting room from the foot of the stairway link to the overbridge.
Platform 7/8 building extension & Platform 13/14 Waiting room
This scheme forms part of the National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP) to improve the overall environment at stations for the benefit of passengers.
Phase one: to relocate Southern staff accommodations to the country end of platforms 7/8, by extending the current British Transport Police offices. The new extension was designed to match the current exterior with cornices, window and door openings dressed with the same period feature timber mouldings. This new facility comprises: staff mess, locker room & male and female toilets.
Phase two: The existing platform buildings on 13/14 was reconfigured & refurbishment to provide new passenger waiting area, increased retail tenancy space and improved customer information facilities. In addition the Southern Station Managers office remained (albeit relocated) and male and female staff toilets were provided.
